This week a short trip to Whitchurch, (renowned for its trout fishing in the clear waters of the River Test) awaited us, in what was expected to be a close and competitive match.
With both teams exiting the Hampshire Cup the week before, a win for either team would certainly help lift the morale of the coaching staff and loyal followers. It seems however, that the children are a tad more resilient and to their credit gain their enjoyment is taking part, no matter what the result.
The opening few minutes allowed both teams to settle down, both displaying accurate passing and solid tackling. It was Swifts who seized the early initiative with a goal from Adam. With the early lead it was important that Swifts maintained their composure and they did exactly that with some great supporting play from Jason, David and Ollie B.
Swifts soon increased their lead with Adam producing a delightful chip over the keeper, 2-0 Swifts. Whitchurch continued to battle and it required some brave and determined goal keeping from Ollie F, who was called in to action many times to repel the Whitchurch attacks. Swifts defensive line up were also on top form, with David, Jack and Ryan, Charlie and Matthew all showing awareness and making decisive tackles.
Whitchurch continued to seek their first goal and with Swifts again demonstrating some weakness in mid-field by allowing the ball to bounce, allowed more possession to Whitchurch who increasingly gained possession as the second half continued. With Swifts rotating the team, Harry M provided some welcome support in midfield with Lucas M helping strengthen the flanks. Whitchurch also sought to rotate and their pressure paid off with a goal in the closing minutes of the game, leading to a tense several minutes in the Swifts camp. Despite going close, Swifts held their own to take the game 2-1 and register the first win against Whitchurch under the stewardship of Jim Driver.
