Firstly welcome back and a warm welcome to Oli and David who have joined us this season.
With the excitement of the Under 11 kit lottery a now distant memory, focus was firmly on our opening game of the season against our good old chums Lyndhurst. Previous form has seen one win, two lost (including the Division Title play-off) and one incident of points being awarded to us via the league.
So what would the opener have in store, would it be mushrooms, fried onion rings….you'll have to wait and see…..!!! (sorry, got distracted)
With the tension rising, not the boys, but from those possibly being asked to run the line (do I hear the cry of volunteers??), the game got underway with a dynamic and energetic start from the Swifts, who had obviously shrugged off any previous disappointment from last season's encounters. In control and well composed, Swifts opened up the scoring with a scorcher from Cai, who turned with the ball and dispatched it goal bound, much to the delight of the large home crowd. Maintaining the possession, Swifts soon increased their lead with further well taken goal from Adam.
Despite a two goal lead, Swifts continued to remain focused. Lyndhurst were very capable of striking back and strong defensive work from Jack, Matthew, Jason and Charlie helped Swifts maintain the advantage.
Our third goal was a delight to watch, the build up started in defence when Jack with great skill steered the ball around the attacking Lyndhurst players and marshalled it out of the Swifts half to Adam. Adam then continued the build up before another great cross was met by Cai who again found the back of the net. This I hope is something we can build upon during the season as it was a fine example of team work!
In the second half, Swifts did have to work hard. Lyndhurst made several attempts to fight back and indeed scored, with the keeper Ollie making it clear he had not seen the ball because of all the players in the box!. Swifts eventually took the game 4-1 with a great strike from Jason, who I think might be trying to score from the half way line at some point this season!!.
